anatomyofanoxford asked: So people who are absolute in their certainty are simply scared? You believe faith is weakness? I don't understand how you think that being unsure of all the big questions lends someone strength… what shaped that in you? That's an intriguing twist on typical definitions of strength and weakness.
i never said ‘faith is weakness’. what i believe is that organized religion answers questions that are not meant to be answered. to me, there is weakness in that because i believe we can all gain a great deal of strength from the emotions and thoughts that come with not understanding everything. as for ‘what shaped me’ …. the greatest lessons i’ve learned have been from the people around me who i’ve grown up with and lived life with, not an antiquated book that offends me on numerous levels. religion is one of the last places i would look for ‘shaping’. you can take a very brief look at the horrors caused by religion to understand why id think this way. religion is not what teaches us to be good people …. its the people who raise us and the experiences we have that shape us. however, religion does often teach a great deal of hate.
